RESEARCHERS DISCOVER A NEW WAY OF PREVENTING BAYS FROM OCEAN ACIDIFICATION?

Ocean acidification which has been affecting the ocean for many years is as a result of human activities. World’s oceans have suffered from absorbing human-made carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which has led to the decreasing pH of saltwater, known as ocean acidification. This has threatened the health of marine organisms and ecosystems

Coastal waterways, such as Chesapeake Bay, can also suffer from low oxygen and acidification.

Latest research carried out by researchers from Xiamen University in China, St. Mary’s College, Oregon State University and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Chesapeake Biological and Horn Point Laboratories on the Chesapeake Bay show that plants near the shore of the bay through strong photosynthetic activity can increase the pH of the water.
